Welcome to South Carolina's beautiful Golden
Corner located in the north western corner of
the state. The Golden Corner is nestled
among the Blue Ridge Mountains and Sumter
National Forest. Three major lakes
Hartwell, Keowee and Jocassee provide ample
recreational opportunities for boating, fishing,
picnicking on warm sandy beaches and uninhibited
islands for quiet retreats.
Lake Keowee
Lake Keowee was constructed by Duke Power
company for use in generating hydroelectric
power. During
construction of the lake the
area known as Keowee Town was lost when the
Keowee River was
dammed during the lake
construction. Keowee
Town was the site of the Lower Cherokee Nation's
capital. The word "Keowee means Place Of
The Mulberries" was visited by the Spanish
explorer Hernando DeSoto in 1540. Lake
Keowee encompasses 18,500 acres with a shoreline
of 300 miles. Much of Lake Keowee has yet
to see development.
Lake Jocassee
Located
high above Lake Keowee, Jocassee has remained
one of the few sparsely developed freshwater
lakes. Jocassee is well known from its
trophy sized Large
Mouth Bass and Brown Trout has true qualities of
a mountain lake, cool waters year round, and
underwater visibility that easily exceeds 20
feet in most area. Jocassee covers 7,656 acres.
Lake Hartwell
Lake
Hartwell was built by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers for flood control and for
hydroelectric power between 1955 and 1963.
Bordering between South Carolina and Georgia
Lake Hartwell is enjoyed by millions of visitors
at its many marinas, state parks, and
campgrounds that dot its shoreline. Lake
Hartwell covers nearly 56,000 acres of water and
boasts a shoreline of 962 miles.
